Instructions

Cutting:

Focus Fabric:  Cut (18) tumbler shapes by “fussy cutting” designs.
To “fussy cut” a design:  Center the clear template over the design and rotary cut around the template, or draw around the template with a marking pencil and cut out fabric shape with scissors.

Coordinating Fabric:  Cut (3) 3 ½” wide strips; cut into (27) tumbler shapes.
Cut (2) 3 ½” x 19 ¾” pieces for top and bottom borders
To cut strips into tumbler shapes:  Align wide bottom edge of template with bottom edge of strip; cut along both sides of template.  Rotate template, aligning to fit and cut again. Repeat for full length of strip.

Binding & Backing Fabric:  Cut (3) 2 ½” wide strips for binding.  Cut 22” square for backing.

Piecing

Use 1/4" seam allowance for all sewing.

  1. Lay out tumbler shapes in attractive pattern, alternating “fussy cut” shapes with coordinating fabric shapes, in rows of 9 shapes (refer to picture).  Each row should begin and end with the coordinating fabric.
  1. When pleased with arrangement, join pieces in each row.  Then join rows.
  1. Use long ruler to straighten “jagged” side edges of quilt.  Align edge of ruler 1 ¾” from bottom points of the 4 fussy cut tumblers along the edge of the quilt; trim edge.
  1. Sew border strips to top and bottom of quilt top.
  1. Iron letters on to quilt top, following package directions, and using a pressing cloth.
  1. Layer quilt top with batting and backing.  Quilt by stitching in the ditch with clear thread, or as desired.
  1. Join binding strips and bind edges.

Vary the design of this quilt for any holiday or special occasion by simply changing the focus fabric.  Expand the size by simply adding more shapes per row, and more rows per quilt.
